playlist no. 1

This is my most recent playlist, the one thats been playing over and over again.
The context for this mix is my late, late nights and early mornings, usually when I'm scrambling for presentations and papers, right through the all nighters and into my first sips of coffee. Yesterday it rained and I spent the afternoon baking cupcakes for class today, washing sheets and towels and day dreaming about life, post college. Not the kind of dreams where you never lose anything, drink mimosas at breakfast and look really good in every shape of sunglasses. The dreaming was unknown, like the ocean of possibilities we all learned about at the curious, age of 10. The last 2 weeks of the semester will be played out to these tracks- Rushing, calm, here are the dreamysounds that make me float

on self respect

Interesting bits: "On Self Respect" was first published in Vogue, June 1961,
Google Image Joan Didion to see pics of her as an old lady

Last week for an assignment I had to choose a piece and write on its rhetorical strengths and weakness. Naturally, I chose this one. Since I had checked out 4 books by Didion over Christmas break and kept them all over due... choosing this essay was also my method of psychologically coping with the library fines.
I have her essay book marked on my computer for easy access/days when I wish her words had come from my own pen/sharing this wealth with you. Isn't it beautiful:
__________________________________________________________________________________

"Once, in a dry season, I wrote in large letters across two pages of a notebook that innocence ends when one is stripped of the delusion that one likes oneself. Although now, some years later, I marvel that a mind on the outs with itself should have nonetheless made painstaking record of its every tremor, I recall with embarrassing clarity the flavor of those particular ashes. It was a matter of misplaced self-respect.

I had not been elected to Phi Beta Kappa. This failure could scarcely have been more predictable or less ambiguous (I simply did not have the grades), but I was unnerved by it; I had somehow thought myself a kind of academic Raskolnikov, curiously exempt from the cause-effect relationships which hampered others. Although even the humorless nineteen-year-old that I was must have recognized that the situation lacked real tragic stature, the day that I did not make Phi Beta Kappa nonetheless marked the end of something, and innocence may well be the word for it. I lost the conviction that lights would always turn green for me, the pleasant certainty that those rather passive virtues which had won me approval as a child automatically guaranteed me not only Phi Beta Kappa keys but happiness, honor, and the love of a good man; lost a certain touching faith in the totem power of good manners, clean hair, and proved competence on the Stanford-Binet scale. To such doubtful amulets had my self-respect been pinned, and I faced myself that day with the nonplussed apprehension of someone who has come across a vampire and has no crucifix at hand.

Although to be driven back upon oneself is an uneasy affair at best, rather like trying to cross a border with borrowed credentials, it seems to me now the one condition necessary to the beginnings of real self-respect. Most of our platitudes notwithstanding, self-deception remains the most difficult deception. The tricks that work on others count for nothing in that well-lit back alley where one keeps assignations with oneself; no winning smiles will do here, no prettily drawn lists of good intentions. One shuffles flashily but in vain through ones’ marked cards the kindness done for the wrong reason, the apparent triumph which involved no real effort, the seemingly heroic act into which one had been shamed. The dismal fact is that self-respect has nothing to do with the approval of others – who we are, after all, deceived easily enough; has nothing to do with reputation, which, as Rhett Butler told Scarlett O’Hara, is something people with courage can do without.

To do without self-respect, on the other hand, is to be an unwilling audience of one to an interminable documentary that deals one’s failings, both real and imagined, with fresh footage spliced in for every screening. There’s the glass you broke in anger, there’s the hurt on X’s face; watch now, this next scene, the night Y came back from Houston, see how you muff this one. To live without self-respect is to lie awake some night, beyond the reach of warm milk, the Phenobarbital, and the sleeping hand on the coverlet, counting up the sins of commissions and omission, the trusts betrayed, the promises subtly broken, the gifts irrevocably wasted through sloth or cowardice, or carelessness. However long we postpone it, we eventually lie down alone in that notoriously uncomfortable bed, the one we make ourselves. Whether or not we sleep in it depends, of course, on... click to keep reading

Petits Fours- Divine Delights

Friday afternoon brought the best surprise! I received a box of the prettiest desserts from Christopher and Natalie (of strawberriessparkles.blogspot.com)! They were too kind to send me the most incredible, birthday gift, ever. I don't usually dress up to match my food, but seriously the pastels were right on trend.

Hope your weekends were as sweet as mine! Happy Monday

I stopped into MAC for a spring lipstick and after trying on 5 shades of creme coral I found the winner. The color was a little scary in the tube when the SA first pulled it out, but it goes on super smooth and since its high res, you don't really need a lot. Amplified lipstick dries quickly though, so I suggest using rosebud salve or cocoa butter on your lips before you apply.

tip: to look like a RuNwayMODel/get lots of stares, smear on a lot. A lot.

we left for spring, came back to summer
you can tell the air is different, because it tastes different when you breathe it in
and last night we slept with our windows open and only with the sheets on,
and today bare feet on the wood floors felt fine, so did iced coffee for breakfast
because after seven days away, the fridge and cabinets were empty
so I left for food and came back with flowers

I found myself happier on the colder days and extremely appreciative of high density, Italian wool.
After today's sunshine/five day forecast, I'm convinced it is time to move the trench to the back of the closet. You will be missed!

MTWTFSS Weekday- Peak Blouse Blue, this blouse comes in over 20 styles, with slight variations in fabric and detail. Did you know the same people that founded Weekday created Cheap Monday?
Lucky "Laureen" Boots- These leather, stacked heel boots are everything I was looking for. The double buckle and suede appearance offer a vintage vibe so I'm not afraid to break them in

Coach Station Bag- The classic coach bags were introduced in the 70's, (the station, the court, the willis) and Coach has recently reissued five iconic styles. I suggest you scour E-bay for an authentic vintage coach- My sister's and I have the court bag in different colors and will attest to their overuse! You'll pay a fraction of the cost and it already comes with character

The Row, Cat Eye Acetate Sunglasses- One of the most popular lens shapes from the past season and still relevant. If you're just looking to test them out, you can find cheap, comparable styles at TopShop, American Apparel and Urban

pages

The late post directly parallels my delayed self reflection on 2011 and my ambitions for 2012.
I bought a moleskin, daily diary pocket calendar at a borders close out sale this past summer with failure to notice that the notebooks start date was January 1, 2012... so I've waited 5 long months to make any notes on the blank pages. So much pressure now! The goal is to maintain a daily record of 2012. I suppose we would all be fine with never remembering where we were, what we did, what we learned a year ago today but I want to. My notebooks are scrawled in with to-do lists and checkmarks but rarely do I find a record of my 'have dones.' TRY it. Highlight the moments in your day- highs and lows. Record the temperature. What you wore. What you ate. Who you laughed with. Who you missed. What you prayed for. What you bought. How you react. Make memos of who you are.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Chloe Ankle Strap Ballerina Flat

Eeee!! I'm so excited about my new ankle bracelet flats... I picked them up at Gap today for $15! They were the last pair in my size- miracle. I'll probably be wearing these all day tomorrow while I finish up errands before the weekend.
Happy last minute Christmas shopping!

STUDY DAY

Appropriate for coffee runs, library lock ins, and the silent treatment.

Finals week and the final weekend of my final fall semester, before finally going home.
Thankful I didn't work today. I spent too long in bed this morning; warm blankets stole all the inspirations I had for my 8 page paper that's due on Monday.

Minimalist Mockneck- I was convinced that a long shift and 2 final exams would have had to earn me something.
Although it's hanger appeal is less redeeming, this sweater has the perfect neckline and is made from 100% Merino Wool.

Pixie Pants- Leggings don't stand a chance. Structured with exposed seams and a back zipper- makes all the difference

Nixon Time Teller Watch- Numbers/hours don't really mean anything to me right now. This gift from my grandpa last xmas is proving timeless.

Supergas- On my Christmas list, Im sporting my black Keds x Gap right now

Ribbed Glovettes-  I'm in love with my arm sleeves. Type away...

DIY- Fashion Mag//Holiday Ornaments

WAIT- It's already mid december and the lit, charlie brown tree in the apartment living room is looking pretty lifeless. Yes, its fake.. but we have yet to adorn the pretty stub with a single ornament. Madewell posted a Holiday How-To: "Amazing D.I.Y Ornaments by YES Gallery" that included a handmade wooden garland and stellated octahedron ornaments (fancy terms for 8-pointed star) SUPER crafty, but what's a DIY with no instruction? A few google searches later on the art of origami, I found myself HERE.

Brought to you by my night off and the 2010's on my bookshelf

What You Need:
Old stack of magazines
Scissors
Patience

A few tips:
These instructions educate you assuming you have an infinite knowledge of origami lingo… so you might want to educate yourself on some of the basic folds and bases before you begin.

Make sure to cut the magazine pages into EVEN squares.

Be Patient- I folded about 2 practice pieces before completing my first star. The pages of a magazine are prone to tear more easily than traditional origami paper

uniform

Rachel's Rockin Uniform- neutral sweater, wayfarers, messenger bag- hair tied TO GO

It's important to develop your own set of go-to pieces and silhouettes that work well together, for you. The same piece can't flatter every figure and not every personality can flatter the same piece; I already know wide leg jeans and trousers are not in my 5 foot 3 inch cards.  So, peace to the apples, pears, giants, hobbits, rebels and princesses...
Half of developing style is, after all, consistency.

What I should be doing

What I should be doing now instead of what I'm doing…

1. looking up words on dictionary.com, words I've circled for later dates

better yet continuing the book I started but haven't finished- highlighting words that make me feel inspired or at peace with my surroundings. Making memos of those quotes that made me forget where I'm sitting, who's looking at me and who's not; forget that its cold in the room or that I cut my finger on the edge of the last page or that my coffee cup is almost empty and I have a finance assignment due at 9 tomorrow morning...

AND then for a short second believe that the most important thing in the universe is that I woke up with eyes, able to filter color and trace marks on a page

2. the 20 sketches for my graphic design class

to sketch an adjective is not a fatal task, although some would disagree. It's a freeing exercise to illustrate characteristics and personify words. Creating shapes for conditioners like whimsical, jealous, impulsive, vain, secluded, anxious- Perhaps if we know what they look like, we become armed to more readily identify them on a daily basis. This could give us the power to flee or embrace

3. Calling my best friend

soaking up the rich details of her own mundane life and experiencing them with her. Learning that she got a job cleaning out a yoga studio in exchange for unlimited class, or that she scored the second goal in the field hockey game her team won in Cleveland, or that she spent 12 dollars eating lunch alone at the WholeFoods in Milwaukee but left with company for lunch next week. Maybe it's to reaffirm her that she's the same girl she was in 6th grade- with the same values, innocence, humor- only with longer hair, better judgement, and her own apartment.

Maybe it's to reaffirm myself that genuine spirits still exist or just to ramble on without filter; like pouring secrets into beautiful, glass bottles with big ears and non judgmental hearts.

OK, break

funny face

Saint Louis Fashion Week starts this Tuesday and goes through Saturday. Five days of shows in St. Louis- it's not Paris or New York but props to STL for having designer Rebecca Taylor in the city on Thursday! I'm really excited to be working this year although I've been warned on the potential side effects (I may not have a problem with them)- increased caffeine consumption, weight loss... mild insanity.

Anyways the office discussed our uniform look on Friday, which is all black. There are definitely a number of approaches I could take to dressing myself this week but I'm planning on understated; observer not observed. I'll take my cue from Funny Face- Paris, Fashion Week, 1950's... all the stars align. I'm convinced Audrey wouldn't have been able to nail her dance sequence in another color.

If you want to buy tickets for Fashion Week clic HERE. You will be missing out if you do not.

christina ricci, now and then

Christina Ricci, NYLON 2011

Ricci's doll face is glossed on the cover of September's Nylon. The star of my favorite childhood movie (and probably some of yours)- I haven't followed her much since then but the retro prints and dazed attitude she sported in her spread had me doing double takes

A favorite, filmed in 1995. Coolest movie I'd seen at 10.

missoni X target

  FOR TARGET 9.13.11

Italy's bella ragaza, Margherita Missoni, is the face of Missoni x Target which officially hits stores tomorrow. Target's collaboration with Missoni yields just over 400 products that have been carefully developed for the line. The collection is an expansive one; targeting the young, fashionable masses while still incarnating Missoni's rich heritage and iconic patterns.
The concept of sporting high fashion, inspired pieces from Target has become seemingly acceptable. Featured GO designers and revered names, (Zac Posen, Cynthia Vincent and Richard Chai) have graced the bodies of those who appreciate the beauty in design but also encounter satisfaction in mutually, affordable prices.
I am in love with the confidence and eclectic spirit of the Missoni women- They truly exude beauty, health, and balance.
